The 2019 Clinet has maintained the stunning delineation that I discerned from the barrel sample. Pure black cherries, hints of cassis and wilted violet scents unfold in the glass with effortless ease, and the oak (75% new, 25% used for 18 months) is neatly integrated. The poised palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with fine-grained tannins and disarming mineralité, particularly toward the finish, which delivers tremendous length and saliva-inducing salinity on the aftertaste. There is a pleasing strictness to this Clinet that is apposite to the flamboyant and decadent wines of the Nineties. This Clinet is one of Ronan Laborde's great achievements.

The 2019 Clinet is showing beautifully in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cherries and berries mingled with hints of violets, licorice, subtle spices and smoke. Full-bodied, sensual and velvety, it's seamless and vibrant, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, resonant finish. This precise, concentrated wine is the finest young Clinet I've ever tasted, and it exemplifies the tremendous progress that Ronan Laborde has made at this estate over the last decade.

Offers the lush, dark, warm fruit profile of the vintage, with crushed plum, blackberry puree and black cherry reduction flavors, all without the toothy, baked hints that mark many of its AOC peers. Glides through with refinement and grace on the finish, which is laced with black tea and incense. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2036. —J.M.

Château Clinet
Château Clinet continues to soar to the top of the prestigious Pomerol estates, making one of the most sought-after wines coming from this region today. The first traces of viticulture on this fine gravelly clay soil dates back to the 17th century, however, after centuries of successive owners, the Laborde family has now owned Château Clinet for almost two decades. Jean-Louis Laborde bought the property in 1998, today, his young and motivated son, Ronan runs the château. Upon the best parcels of the gravel terraces in Gunz, the 11-hectare vineyard produces the best Merlot in the world. Famous cult-wine oenologist, Michel Rolland has provided consultancy input for over 10 years, producing high-standard Grand Cru wines vintage after vintage. Ronan even established innovative eco-friendly farming and vinification methods to further show respect for his terroir. Bottled with neither fining nor filtration, their wines are first matured in 100% new oak for over five years. The château continues to craft five-star wines, the Grand Vin, Clinet is an impressive ripe and full-bodied red. While Ronan by Clinet is an excellent example of Ronan’s entrepreneurship. Ronan by Clinet was made to present an approachable wine that can have a wide appeal, as well as the ability to carry the quality guarantee of a Château Clinet wine.
