A barrel sample, the 2016 Bellevue Mondotte has a very deep purple-black color and comes bursting out of the glass with well-defined notes of crushed black plums, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherries plus hints of Indian spices, potpourri, roasted meats and wood smoke. The palate is very big, rich, full and built like a brick house with a firm frame of grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and layered.

A very polished and frankly ripe style, with caressing cassis and creamed raspberry notes cruising through, infused with anise and warm licorice flavors that drape across the finish. Despite the obvious style, this has density without coming off as heavy, with a very long finish that lets the fruit sing. Will have fans for sure. Best from 2021 through 2035. 333 cases made. — JM

Château Bellevue Mondotte
Château Bellevue Mondotte is this appellation’s tiny jewel, owned by the brilliant Bordeaux visionary Gérard Perse, of the celebrated Grand Cru Classé Château Pavie. The two-and-a-half-hectare parcel of nearly 50-year-old vines is planted to a majority of Merlot with smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and lies on some of the best limestone-based soils in Saint-Émilion. Since 2001, Perse has established several changes at the estate, the cellars have been renovated and he has aimed to purify his vinification processes. With lower yields and drastic green harvesting, the wines are then fermented in oak tanks with malolactic in barrel before being aged on the lees and bottled completely unfiltered and unfined. The quality-conscious driven mindset of Perse and consulting oenologist, Michel Rolland is continuously transparent in the château’s rich and concentrated wine production. Bellevue-Mondotte, the Grand Vin, is a big, full-bodied Merlot based blend, profiting from extended maturation in new oak.
