<br/>A rich display of black cherry, licorice, tar and smoke unfolds as the 2018 Contrada Porcaria (P) challenges the imagination. This is dark and brooding in character, the silky wave of black fruit and minerals evolving into a more tactile display of fine-grained tannins and savory exotic spice. The Porcaria is almost salty at times, saturating to the senses and youthfully clenched. Notes of currants and tobacco linger incredibly long. This will require some time in the cellar to show its best, but it will be well worth the wait.

From the Contrada Porcaria (a 1.5-hectare plot at 650 meters in elevation), the 2018 Contrada P shows more intensity and maybe a small degree more concentration and fruit weight compared to some of the other Nerello Mascalese bottles in this contrada-specific series from Andrea Franchetti. This wine sports slightly broader shoulders with tart cherry, dried currant and bitter almond. I also taste the delineation of the wine's tannic structure with more clarity in this release of 2,750 bottles from Porcaria.

Tenuta di Trinoro & Passopisciaro
La Tenuta di Trinoro si trova nell'angolo più remoto della regione, dove la Toscana incontra l'Umbria e il Lazio. Andrea Franchetti fondò la proprietà nel territorio vinicolo vergine di Sarteano nel 1992. Oggi Franchetti rimane uno dei viticoltori più estremi d’Italia, continuando a dare impulso ai modelli francesi tradizionali di viticoltura. Ha piantato le varietà bordolesi ad altitudini fino a 500-700 metri, ad alte densità, e poi vendemmia il più tardi possibile, addirittura nel mese di novembre. Continua a vinificare ogni piccola parcella singolarmente, in modo da poter monitorare minuziosamente lo sviluppo di ciascuna, scegliendo solo il meglio per la cuvée Tenuta di Trinoro. Chiaramente, il terroir è particolare, non solo per la sontuosità, ma anche per l'originalità che conferisce ai vini. Anche le basse rese aumentano le note strutturate di frutti neri e di erbe selvatiche. Ammiriamo il Tenuta di Trinoro di Franchetti - a base di Cabernet Franc con piccole quantità di Cabernet Sauvignon e Petit Verdot - ma la sua seconda etichetta, Le Cupole, offre un rapporto qualità-prezzo troppo bello per essere vero.
