This domaine was founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur producer from Dijon. By the beginning of the 20th century, he owned some twenty hectares which were spread over Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. In addition to wine, he also produced plant spirits which continued for two more generations up until 1949. Prior to the creation of protected designations of origin in 1878, the estate's wines were sold under labels only mentioning "Château Chambolle-Musigny ", following in the Bordeaux tradition. Due to the difficulties following the war, in 1950, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, the great-grandson of Frédéric sold the liqueur business and rented out his vines to other producers. But starting in 1985, his own son, Frédéric, took over the responsibility of the domaine and began producing their own wine again. In 2004, he was able to recuperate the last parcel of his vines - Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-Saint-Georges - which had been on lease to Faiveley since 1950. At this moment, the domaine grew in size from 4 to an impressive 14 hectares literally overnight. Today, they are considered one of the greatest producers in the region and a star in the picturesque village of Chambolle-Musigny.
