Vosne-Romanée is considered the top of the top in terms of Burgundy villages and Comte Liger-Belair is one of the best producers from that blessed village. The estate resides in the most distinguished property in the village, the Château de Vosne-Romanée. It initially came into the family (with some vineyards) when General Liger-Belair purchased it in 1815. Over time Liger-Belair acquired more vineyards when his nephew and heir married a member of the Marey heiress. At one point, the family owned La Tâche, La Grande Rue, La Romanée, much of Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot and a multitude of top 1er Crus. However, almost everything was lost in 1933 due to succession issues and the domaine was put up for auction. A few vineyards, however, were saved and leased to sharecroppers for many years…until 2000, that is, when young Vicomte Louis-Michel Liger-Belair decided to recreate the domaine. He built it up quickly to its current size of 8.7 hectares with vineyards that lie mostly in Vosne-Romanée with two in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Though it is true that they own the most exceptional vineyard locations, the family also makes some of the most complex and refined wines in the Côte.
