A name to look out for, as one of Bordeaux’s remaining six Classified Growths in both white and red, Château Malartic Lagraviére is one of the appellation’s finest. Belgian couple, Michele and Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie bought the property in 1997, now the newly renovated château is in the hands of their son and daughter-in-law, Jean-Jacques and Severine. By the turn of the century, the estate had adopted organic farming and reduced yielding practices, which has led to a great deal of heighted quality. Like many Graves properties, the 47-hectare plot dedicates only a small part to white grapes, a mere 7-hectares in this case, with the majority remaining planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Famed vigneron, Michel Rolland consults for their reds. With about 60% of the crop going into the Grand Vin, using only the best of the best fruit, Malartic Lagraviére Rouge has an elegant, well-balanced nature that with time develops into a complex and impressive wine. Along with the Château’s characteristic claret, the Malartic Lagraviére Blanc offers youthful and luxurious notes, over its fresh oaked base.
